Chennai (Tamil: ) (formerly Madras) Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is one of the largest cultural, economic and educational centers of South India.



The first official use of the name Chennai was on 8 August 1639, before Francis Day of the East India Company, the Sennekesu  Perumal temple was built in 1646. In 1996, the Government of Tamil Nadu officially changed the name from Madras to Chennai. At that time the name had changed in many Indian cities.
